Smoke is not a single substance. It is a dynamic aerosol created by incomplete combustion. Kitchen fires often create protein smoke, which can be nearly invisible but leaves an intense, persistent odour and a hard-to-remove film on cabinetry and walls. Fuel oil or furnace puff-backs leave dense black soot. Without identifying the exact type of residue, improper cleaning can make the damage worse.

Health risks are significant. Smoke particles can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and other toxic compounds. These settle on surfaces and become airborne again when disturbed.
